Neurotoxin injections, also known as Botox, are injectable solutions that temporarily block nerve receptors in muscles, causing them to relax. This can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and lines. Neurotoxins are derived from a highly-purified protein from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Different manufacturers make different types of neurotoxins, which can vary in formulation, potency, and cost. The number of units needed for treatment depends on the areas being treated and the severity of the skin condition. For example, forehead wrinkles may require 20–40 units, while eye area wrinkles may require 6–12 units. Neurotoxin injections can take 15–30 minutes to administer, and the results usually begin working within 1–3 days, though it can take a week or more to see full results. The effects generally last 3–4 months, but can last longer or shorter depending on the patient. To maintain the effects, patients may need regular follow-up injections spaced at least three months apart.
